Hiking on the island of Cres and Vulture sanctuary visit
Having had a storm the day before it was really windy and 10 degrees colder than yesterday. We proceeded with a one hour drive to the ferry, picking up our legendary guide Boris on the way then headed over to the island of Cres. We then had a ten minute drive to the mountain that we were going to hike up called SIS, it was 639 m tall. We got out of the bus and the wind was blowing strongly, it made the hike that was to come so much more challenging. Heading towards the mountain I found it so steep and could not believe that the path ahead was so rocky. I have never had previous hiking experience and was very hesitant and worried to get up the mountain because I have never walked so much on an incline and thought I was gonna be at the back and fall behind. However, despite the fact that the wind could blow me away at any time, the views were amazing and really motivated me. I was curious to see what was at the top. Through this hike I decided to take a leap of faith and put myself out of my comfort zone, I ended up being first to the top and first to the bottom. I felt so proud of myself at the end and did not believe I could do something so difficult and enjoy it so much. I definitely want to experience it again, the thrill is amazing and the feeling after is unimaginable.

You know the Hautlieu motto? “Summa Petamus”? Well today we reached it literally, scaling the highest peak on the island of Cres. I’ll be honest, I got maybe 100 metres up the Sis mountain, saw the drop and was ready to get back down immediately, it took a bit of encouragement from Mr. Grace and my roommates but we all stayed as a small group and made our way up at our own pace, after all the chain is only as strong as its weakest link and together we strengthened our chain and faced our personal challenges. Honestly, I’m proud that I reached the peak of the mountain despite falling in some unfortunate manners occasionally and eating dirt, and I think that by pushing ourselves today, we have each discovered more about each other and grown closer as a group, but stronger as individuals.
