Croatia Trip 2024 – Day 8

Yesterday we went to Park Učka. We took the coach to get to the top and the roads where very curvy and the view was spectacular looking over Rijeka. We hiked around the park and the trail was roughly 6.5km long and there was an elevation change of 400m. The park was very beautiful with all the vibrant colours and biodiversity. The tour guide was telling us about all the positive and negative impacts of human on this land which I found very interesting. I was very surprised when she told us that people chopping down trees was good because it created a large piece of grassland in the middle of the forest. It was used for cattle but now there are plants and flowers everywhere and she told us that in the summer it’s beautiful because of all the different coloured flowers blooming. As we were walking, she was talking about all the different animals that are in the park. I was very surprised when she said that there are brown bears but luckily, they were on the other side of the park. After the hike we then went into the town of Rijeka. Rijeka is very interesting because of all of the old history. The guide was telling us about one of the buildings which was built in 1884. The building was first used for mentally ill people due to the mind-blowing views that you had which would help someone recover. Nowadays it’s a very fancy hotel. We also had very big slice of pizza was really good. I noticed that the pizza has always been good which I was surprised about but it makes sense because of how close we are to Italy but also that Croatia used to be part of Italy. The main thing I took from today was how important it is to preserve nature and its biodiversity because it just creates such exciting places to be when going for a hike or just to sit and observe.
