Paintings by Year 12 Hautlieu Students
The paintings on show in St Saviour’s Church are the culmination of a visual investigation the year 12 students (aged 16 to 17) made between September and December. The students studied the human figure throughout this project in a variety of contexts. They visited the church on numerous occasions studying the graveyard sculptures and stained-glass windows and thought about mortality and spirituality. They visited Jersey Museum and saw the human figure in the context of history and narrative. The students created group sculptures of human figures out of concrete that were placed in a forested area of Hautlieu School. This was to make them think of permanence, physicality and nature.
The students kept visual journals throughout this time and used what they created and learned to produce a series of images that reflected their investigation. These 6 foot by 3 foot acrylic paintings on canvas are the result of this investigation. They echo the colours and forms seen in and around the church such as the Lily Langtry sculpture which is used by a few of the students, or the black lead framing of the stained-glass windows. They also give a sense of what young people think about and find important in their lives beyond the material or social.
This exhibition will run until 1st April.
